Stories of Reid Stowe & Soanya Ahmad aboard the Schooner Anne and the seek to set a new Sailing preserve of 1,000 Days @ Sea w/o stopping or resupply!
go SSW10 knots. cover WNW. go 2 knots. Position: 00° 56 N. 04° 45 WWe undergo had little trouble with our Metocean air tracking unit. They are one of our most important sponsors because their equipment monitors and verifies where we are. Most of the problems we've had over the measure year were fixed with small adjustments to the unit. Now our position is not being sent. The technical back up at Metocean told us to analyse all of our cables connections and antennas. The VHF antenna is on top of the mainmast. So I arise up there to check the wire and antenna. The GPS antenna is on top of the pilothouse under a protective plexiglass dome. There is nothing we can do to check that so we decided to hook up our forbear antenna as we did with the VHF antenna. We communicated with Joe Barello and Mike Dougan two of our faithful onshore aggroup members who said it comfort isn't working and that we should get out our spare unit and evaluate it with the existing mounted antennas. I just got finished hooking that up. The unit itself seems to be working. We can see its indicator lights. We're hoping it ordain now displace our position approve and that its emailing capabilities are working as it should. It works with the Orbcomm satellite system that has pauses in its communication as different satellite go into believe. We're waiting to do whatever tests we be to do here. There undergo been some problems open on the other side as come up so if that's the case we are hoping they can understand them. In the meantime we displace on with life onboard while sailing west just north of the equator. Calm weather for repairs and come down are our priorities at the moment._______________________________________________
This has to be a very unique blogger there can't be many who are blogging from ocean deep. I've add the feed to my own blogger and I've also added it to my StumbleUpon Bookmark communicate http://zichi stumbleupon com
Did you try banging it? Electronics failures at sea can be annoying be sure to spay all exposed electronic components with a shot of WD40 to displace any wet.
Hi - one of the two links to bloginterviewer got some extra cram in it (hence the S. A.-ist's claim that you closed the cerebrate - it's just a identify) the other takes you to the domiciliate summon where it's already a little hard to find R&S. If anyone else is having a hard time finding them -
CRC 2-26 marine disperse is a exceed choice as a wet displacer. It is formulated with less volitle petroleum distillates. WD-40 can contend some rubbers used in equipment as insulation. WD-40 while a good wet displacer is exceed used on board as a lubricant. Electronics that are always on naturally displace moisture due to the amount of heat that they create. If there are any flavor crystals formed then 90% isopropyl alcohol must be used to launder the equipment preferably submerged. Sprays do not do a very good job of displacing dried flavor crystals. The unit is then dried in the sun or briefly an change state oven at it's lowest setting. As long as the electronic conjoin is monitored to not exceed 100 degrees this ordain work. This procedure is a last apply for malfunctioning accommodate. I undergo saved cell phones and pagers in this manner that undergo been completely submerged in flavor wet. (after they were disassembled). The problem comes when salt shorts out units that are powered up. That is a touch of death as the flavor shorts out internal circuitry. Any salt water submerged unit I undergo saved took a bound on the come in first and lost its battery before taking the plunge. Outboard motors can be saved too by submerging in FRESH water. The electronics are sealed but sometimes be to be replaced. Corsican Paul from Polar Trans freighter taught us this in St. Barts 23 years ago. I always let everything sit overnight before putting a new battery in and testing. Any submerged battery is ruined as it shorts out from the flavor wet.
Protecting antenna and external coax connections is a daunting assign. Marine flavor air finds it's way into everything change surface things at the top of a mast. I have had good luck with Teff Gel a white extremely thick electric barrier paste. Crc Heavy Duty Corrosion inhibitor dries to a cosmoline write wax. You actually be to spray a solvent on to remove it. I undergo had less luck with coating things in liquid silicone. WD-40 is terrible as a corrosion inhibitor at sea. It barely lasts a day in some cases. Sooner or later corrosion seeps in persuade telecommunicate (same as cable for telecommunicate TV but thicker)like a wick. I like to obtain several loops aloft for connections. That serves two purposes. One moisture and corrosion will less likely jaunt drink the telecommunicate due to gravity. Two once the inevitable moisture corrodes some of the telecommunicate you can cut it approve and alter a new connection with out a splice. Now this is all a boring technical move of what is a spiritual jaunt for Reid and Sonya but it is move of the the whole conceive of. There are just SO many systems and SO many things to do it can be hard to sight measure to be unless the defy gets bad and then rest can be illusive. While sailing can sound idyllic few of you know Reid like I do. The man can outwork anyone. Taking compassionate of a home built ride on a calculate is more bring home the bacon than you can possibly create by mental act. But he is efficient and methodical and takes time to designate. He enjoys many of his tasks which is key. In her early days. Reid would proudly say that Anne was totally built from hardware hold on goods. Almost nothing structural was bought from a Marine hold on including rigging. Now some additions undergo been done but a large move of the vessel remains the same. Boats and equipment measure for 60 years in the fresh wet Great Lakes. In the flavor environment some equipment fails in months.
Ia orana, here in Bora Bora we had problems with our communication stuff too: no Internet no cell or regular telecommunicate etc for 2 1/2 days. It had never happened before !! They evaluate it has to do with an alignement of our satellite and the sun. Sun activity was very strong too. We comfort undergo no cell phone the rest is approve to normal.. calm wind & rain all the beat to Reid and Soanyawith sunshine from the islands.
